Duplicate Content – Surely The Message Is Getting ThroughOn April 27, 2022 by admin
I know we have written about it before and I know many others have as well. If you haven’t heard, you will not get penalized for having duplicate content. There, I don’t think I could get any louder.
This is not a ‘but’, however, duplicate content could be costing you when it comes to search rankings. It is not the content that is costing you. Rather, it is your web site’s structure. If the same content appears under several different URLs then you will have what is often referred to as ‘duplicate content issues’. And that is what they are – issues.
Chris Crum on WebProNews has a lengthy post on the topic along with a video from Google that explains their approach. The video also addresses some of the ‘issues’ found with duplicate content. Google have said many times that one version of the content will be selected as the most appropriate – however, which version will it be? There are many factors affecting this as explained in the video:
your link popularity will be diluted. Backlinks pointing to several different URL versions of the same content, will make it harder to accumulate link juice for one URL. Greg says that user-unfriendly URLs in search results may offset branding efforts and decrease usability as well. Plus, with multiple versions of the same thing, Google will spend more time crawling the same content, meaning it will have less time to go deeper into your site, and you run the risk of having content not get indexed.
It’s a lengthy quote but it covers some important issues. For example, you may not realize that your duplicate content is preventing other content from being indexed, ranked, and perhaps appearing in the search results.
Duplicate content is not an issue. If your site does produce the same content under different URL’s, you have got web design problems – not duplicate content problems.
